Taiping Zoo is the oldest zoological park in Malaysia, established in 1961.
It is located in a natural rainforest area, at the foothills of Bukit Maxwell (Maxwell Hill) within an area of 36 acres. The Zoo is located within the large area that is Taman Tasik Taiping (Taiping Lake Gardens). Taiping Zoo houses around 1200 animals from 140 species. The Zoo is very focused on conservation efforts, with successful breeding programs for tigers, lions, siamang, nilgai, deer, burung kuak (Black-crowned Night-Heron) and many more.
The Zoo also has a veterinarian that is accessible to the public, although it is advised to call ahead and make an appointment beforehand.
Zoo Taiping main activities focus on recreation, education, conservation, and research, with many specially-tailored activities for a more enriching experience.
The Zoo is open daily, including weekends and public holidays from 8.30am to 6pm.
The Night Safari is also open daily, including weekends and public holidays from 8pm to 11pm. The Night Safari stays open an hour later or Saturday nights and eves of public holidays, from 8pm to 12am.

Taiping Zoo’s night safari is the first of it’s kind in Malaysia. It features a tour of the parts of the zoo that house nocturnal animals, made visible by lighting that simulates moonlight. For the full experience of how nocturnal animals live, and the various sounds of a nocturnal rainforest habitat, visitors are encouraged to keep their voices low and not to make sudden loud noises. Flashlights, torchlights, and cameras with a flash are not allowed, as these devices may cause discomfort to the animals.

The animals are fed between 9am and 12pm everyday. Visitors are allowed to assist the zoo rangers and technicians in feeding the animals.
